I saw this article and thought it was worth sharing with our followers. Things have been fairly quiet with COVID and so good news like this is worth sharing.
Worn tire fragments apparently get washed into nearby streams spreading 6PPD-quinone into the habitat. The chemical has killed test salmon within five hours when subjected to comparable quantities measured in streams after rainstorms.
Now that the chemical responsible is identified, we (meaning humanity as a whole) need the research to be replicated so that we can then lobby tire manufacturers to change their recipe. Regardless, this is very interesting and an awesome success story.
A big shout out to Edward Kolodziej and Zhenyu Tian from the University of Washington Tacoma! Great job!
